Five days is Maui's sweet spot: long enough for all three headline acts — Haleakala at dawn, the Road to Hana, the west side — with beach days as connective tissue instead of leftovers. The architecture below alternates big days with soft ones, because vacations, like training plans, are built on recovery.
Arrival: groceries, Kamaole, first sunset
Land, provision, unpack, ocean — in that order and quickly. Kamaole II's sandy bottom and lifeguard tower make it the perfect first swim, and the west-facing sand makes it the perfect first sunset.
Dinner stays casual and close: Coconut's fish tacos or Nalu's. Tonight's homework is ten minutes of admin that saves the week: confirm the Haleakala sunrise slot for day 2, and lock a Molokini boat for day 5's morning.
If it is winter, take twenty minutes on the lanai with binoculars before bed — the channel's whale show starts immediately and never charges admission.
Haleakala sunrise + upcountry, afternoon recovery
The 3:45 am alarm, the warm layers, the drive into the stars, and then dawn igniting the crater from 10,000 feet — the best morning on the island, engineered to be over by 7:30 with the whole day still ahead.
Spend the descent in upcountry: Makawao breakfast, a mile of the Sliding Sands Trail if the legs vote yes, Kula Botanical Garden for the gentle option. Your park pass stays valid three days — remember that for Hana's Kipahulu end tomorrow.
Afternoon is deliberately empty: Keawakapu, a nap disguised as reading, early dinner, early bed. Tomorrow is the longest, best day of the trip and it starts at dawn too.
The Road to Hana, done right
Leave by 7 with a full tank and the Hana guide loaded: 600 curves, 50-odd one-lane bridges, and the best coastline drive in America. Warm up at Twin Falls (smoothie, lower falls), then let the waterfalls and overlooks set the rhythm — stop less than you want to; the great stuff is past halfway.
The two bookings that matter: your timed Waianapanapa entry (black sand, sea caves — non-residents reserve up to 30 days ahead, no same-day) and, if you push past Hana town, the Pipiwai Trail's bamboo forest and 400-foot Waimoku Falls on your existing park pass — the single best thing on the entire road.
Drive the loop home tired and triumphant (or, the deluxe version: overnight in Hana and come back a person of leisure). Plates at Paia Fish Market on the return are tradition — you will be exactly the right amount of hungry.
West side: Kapalua coast, Napili, an evening in Lahaina's north end
Recovery disguised as sightseeing: cruise the west coast to walk the flat, spectacular Kapalua Coastal Trail — three beaches, the Dragon's Teeth, winter whales off every point. It is the easiest great walk on Maui.
Afternoon belongs to Napili Bay, the west side's perfect swimming crescent, or Kaanapali if you want the resort-mile scene and the Black Rock cliff divers at sunset.
Evening option that earns its reservation: Star Noodle — the beloved noodle house at Lahaina's surviving north end, reopened after the 2023 fire and worth supporting with your appetite. Book ahead; the room is small and the following is not.
Molokini morning, Wailea finale
Check in at Maalaea or Kihei boat ramp at dawn for the Molokini snorkel — the sunken crater's 100-foot-visibility aquarium is calmest, clearest and least crowded on the early boats. It is the one paid activity this plan insists on.
Land by early afternoon for the trip's victory lap: Wailea Beach hours, then the Beach Path at golden hour, then the closing dinner — Monkeypod for festive, or Humble Market Kitchin for the sunset-window splurge.
Fly home tomorrow having done the volcano, the jungle road, the west coast and the crater reef — with actual beach hours in between. That is the five-day promise, kept.
Make it smoother
- Book on day of flight purchase: rental car, Haleakala sunrise slot, Molokini boat, Waianapanapa window, one nice dinner.
- Alternate big days with beach days — the plan's whole architecture.
- The $30 park pass covers Haleakala AND Pipiwai within 3 days; sequence days 2-3 to exploit it.
- Full tank + downloaded maps before Hana; gas and signal both thin out east.
- Morning water, afternoon wind: swims and boats before noon, always.
- Winter trips: lanai + binoculars = free daily whale show.
